Transitioning from Translator to Interpreter: Everything You Need to Know about Healthcare Interpreting

This webinar focuses on discovering the world of medical interpreters through the eyes of a professional translator who recently decided to venture into this field. We will be debunking common misconceptions about the profession and exploring every-day challenges faced by interpreters, the national certification process and all the necessary skills to be successful at this job.

Participants will receive information on the most essential topics for beginner interpreters, such as the national standards of practice and ethical protocols, the roles of the interpreter and the modes of interpretation, the difference between working as a freelancer or a staff interpreter, tips on negotiating rates and contacting clients, the dynamics of hospital staff relationships, stress management and debriefing and much more; combined with interesting personal anecdotes, vital resources and useful tips.

Biography:

Paula Penovi is a certified Translator and Interpreter from Argentina who holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Technical, Literary and Scientific Translation. She has been translating since 2011, but always dreamed of one day becoming an Interpreter. When she moved to the United States in 2016, she started working as a part-time Medical Interpreter at Mission Health System, as well as freelancing for numerous agencies in North Carolina. She recently obtained her ATA certification and also became a Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI-Spanish) through the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI). She is now the co-owner of Argentum Translations, an agency which provides specialized language services.
