Patient Navigation for Medical Interpreters

Research shows significant overlapping between the roles of the medical interpreter and those of clinical community health workers, or patient navigators. However, there is little cross-training. This presentation features a new training program addressing this need.

Abstract
Patient Navigation is an emerging profession in the US. The effectiveness of patient navigation is well known in the context of cancer care. Recent research in primary and specialty care indicates that Medical Interpreters are uniquely positioned to address linguistic, cultural and literacy barriers, to which LEP patients are particularly vulnerable. Patient Navigators routinely serve as interpreters, while Medical Interpreters are constantly asked to perform navigation functions. However, there is very little cross-training. Patient Navigation interventions significantly improve patient-provider communication, screening rates, utilization of primary care services, care coordination, patient safety, treatment adherence and follow-up rates.

Health systems utilizing trained patient navigators have seen substantial savings in resources resulting from a decrease in missed appointments, over utilization of emergency departments and timely payment of medical bills.

3) Discuss the potential costs and benefits of implementing dual-role programs
